What has been happening for the past few days is something that would outrage every right-thinking Indian. A PIL filed by the Janata Party President Subramaniam Swamy over a couple months ago has taken its time to develop into a full-fledged political maelstrom and politicians of both ends of the spectrum - the loony Left and the reactionary Right have sought to portray themselves as the guardians of India's heritage and economy. What was an innocuous error on the part of the Central government and overzealous officials at the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) turned out to assume dangerous proportions with Lord Rama being hijacked and an ugly political football match being enacted on the political stage to the utter disgust of the bourgeoisie.
Political arguments aside, the Rama Setu is vital purely from the historical point of view and surely forms part of our natural and cultural heritage just as the Grand Canyon does for the US of A. Indian communists have gotten hold of one more stick to beat the Indian Hindu middle-class and their glee is predictable. What's surprising is the economic arguments being put forward by all sorts of armchair commentators sprinkled with their own idiosyncratic ideas of secularism and Hindu-bashing. This hypocrisy must stop sooner than later otherwise the pathologically passive Hindu would surely do something equally outrageous to vent his ire. After all what do you do when you are pushed against a wall and a seculatr wall at that?
